Turin Municipality
New Cultural Center - Turin

Commissioned by: Turin Municipality – the Culture and Museum Authority

Architectural Design: arch. Mario Bellini

Design winner of the public competition called by the Culture and Museum Authority of Turin Municipality for the realization of a New Cultural Center.

The goal of this realisation is to create a new strongly-attracting cultural facility inside the city of Turin with a 40.000sq.m library, two prose theatres (1.200 and 400 seats), a 500 seats outdoor theatre, offices, public service areas, restaurants, management services, parking lots, green areas.

In terms of energy saving the design consists in the use of underground water-table (max extraction depth 35mt - not usable for potable purpose) for HVAC use in combination with a chilled-beams system in the library areas.

During the hot season the underground water-table will be used for:

  •   the pre-chilling of the fresh air with an energy saving of about the 20% of the total frigorific load

  •   the feed of chilled-beams in the library, realising a "low-cost chilling" (the underground water-table, extracted at an almost constant temperature of 15°C, is used, previously treated by heat-exchanger, as chilling fluid in the beams, which require a temperature of 17-18°C in summer, giving an energetically free-of-charge air conditioning)

  •   the chilling of ACUs’ condensers, with a 10% decrease in electrical consumption (underground water-table allows the ACUs’ condensation at sensibly lower temperatures rather than with the use of cooling towers or air operated condensers)

The use of chilled-beam system in the library has further aspects as:

  •   soundproof system thanks to the absence of moving equipment

  •   vertical-thermal-gradient reduction

  •   high-graded physiological comfort for the occupants

Further aspect of the use of underground water-table is:

  •   removal of external technical volumes related to ACU’s condensation system (as cooling towers or air condenser systems) avoiding the relative environmental, acoustic and visual impact.

Design data:
