NEW WIND TUNNEL FERRARI
Maranello

Commissioned by: DIOGUARDI S.p.A.

Architectural design: Renzo Piano Building Workshop

Widening Architecture: Arch. Alessandro Traldi

Detail Design of M&E Plants supporting the new Wind Tunnel in Maranello.

Transformer station in closed-ring configuration with directional protections with pilot conductor; a 3,500kVA transformer with double winded secondary to feed the fan (5m diameter), a 2,500Kva transformer to feed the auxiliary systems as: rolling road system synchronised to the wind speed in order to cancel the boundary layer effect between vehicle and ground, F1 single-seat special vertical movement platform (dim. 5.60x5.60m, max. load 6,000kg), data acquisition system for all the force components acting on the vehicle, air conditioning, light and power, telephone/data systems for the offices and laboratories annexed to the tunnel.

Air/water climatisation system with a centralised air treatment unit connected to room air conditioning units which control the temperature and the humidity degree in every single area during the whole year.

In the laboratory, a proper air balance maintains the room optimal conditions and is guaranteed by a thermo-ventilation system integrated with an expulsion system, with compensation of the exhaust fans of the tool-machines controlled by a programmed electronic system.

In 2002, a personnel increase due to the successes of the team, made it necessary to widen offices and labs.

The plants design had to consider the need for the Contractor to keep all the processes, such as design, in-lab model construction and full-duty simulation in the tunnel, in continuous service during site execution, plants widening and moving steps.

Purpose-made customised solutions were designed to avoid any impact on both activities and original Renzo Piano's architecture of the existing compound.

Acoustics received particular attention through the realisation of soundproof mazes and panels. A Data Centre, complete with a double CO2 / sprinkler fire extinguishing system and double electrical feeding will be dedicated to the wind tunnel.
