COMUNE DI TORINO (TURIN CITY COUNCIL) – Culture and Museums Authority
International Design competition winner in 2002.
The aim of the project is to create a highly attractive cultural “magnet” within the city, including a library of around 40.000 sqm, a drama theatre featuring 1200 seats, a further theatre with around 400 seats, an open air theatre with 500 seats, offices, service areas for the public, restaurants, management services, parking, green areas.

The characteristics of Turin subsoil do not allow to design a plant exploiting the geothermal resources (groundwater) to generate 100% of heating and cooling energy.
Geothermics is therefore integrated for load peak periods only. The system uses evaporative towers and/or traditional boilers, even if highly efficient ones (condensation).
The distinctiveness of this plant is the use of groundwater, through the intervention of heat exchangers, as cooling fluid directly inside the cold beams positioned in the entire library.
This system allows the library to take advantage of “”free cooling”" for most of its needs.
Further distinctive features:
• recovered condensation multi-use refrigeration units, convertible into heat pumps
• use of groundwater to pre-cool the external air supply
