A distinctive aspect of this work was the search for design solutions allowing an extremely fast and efficient implementation, yet limiting its cost and operating expenses. The design work started in autumn 2001; on 30th June 2002 the first building of around 6.000 sqm was handed over to the end user, MARSH; on 31st December 2002 further two buildings, for around 25.000 sqm, were handed over to the end user, Unicredito
This is the first project where, despite no geothermal resources being available and “uneasy” winter weather conditions, the energy generation (hot and cold) is provided by MULTI-USE refrigeration units convertible into heat pumps, cooled down by AIR.
Once considered the particular configuration of the thermofrigorific power station and all plants fed by it, the COP (C.O.P.=Coefficient of Performance) – defined as the ratio between the outgoing thermal energy (thermal cooling energy + thermal heating energy =outgoing energy) and the energy going into the system (electric energy=ingoing energy) – is always at the highest obtainable levels, considering the thermo-hygrometric conditions and the conditions of use of the “Building/Plant System”.
In that period of the year when energy is mainly needed for cooling (summer and mild seasons), all energy for “heating”, distributed to users, is generated “at no energy cost”. On the contrary, in that period of the year when the generation of heating energy is predominant (winter), all energy for cooling, distributed to users, is generated “at no energy cost”.
Emergency boilers are foreseen, to be used only in case the heat pumps should not work (breakdown, planned maintenance, etc.)
